Ticonderoga, NY: Fort Ticonderoga is pleased to announce a new and immersive overnight program for Boy Scout groups in the fall 2013.
“Imagine your troop being able to garrison Fort Ticonderoga overnight!” said the Fort’s Director of Education Rich Strum. “Give your scouts an experience they’ll never forget—a rare chance to spend the night at Fort Ticonderoga.”

A limited number of slots are available in September and October for scouts interested in spending the night in the historic barracks of the Fort.
Scouts arrive in mid-afternoon and are immediately thrust into the life of a solider at Ticonderoga in 1775. They’ll participate in the “Planting the Tree of Liberty” program and then have some time to explore the Fort and Museum before closing time.

“Once the visitors are gone and the Fort is secured for the night,” said Director of Interpretation Stuart Lilie, “scouts will establish their overnight ...

CATS Summer Travel Writing Contest Begins: Win $500

What are you doing this summer? Summer is prime time for exploring New York’s Champlain Valley. “There are few places with historic hamlets settled so sweetly into a rich landscape of forests, farms, and hills with views of a beautiful lake and mountains,” notes Chris Maron, executive director of Champlain Area Trails (CATS).

This is the perfect place to hike, paddle the lake, browse a farmer’s market, track songbirds, or enjoy a gourmet meal. Then write about your summer adventures—your story could earn you $500.

“Now in its third cycle, the CATS Travel Writing Contest aims to spread the word about all the Champlain Valley has to offer and promote tourism to the area,” explains Gretel Schueller, contest coordinator. The winner, selected by our guest judge, will receive a $500 first prize. There’s ...

Drawing on landscape painting, photography, traveler's accounts, and other

experienced and preserved. Key topics and figures along the way include the
sublime, romanticism, Henry David Thoreau, Thomas Cole and the Hudson River
School, John Muir, Ansel Adams, and the Lorax.

January 27, 2012 - Westport, NY- An independent field biology study turned out to be especially fruitful for both teacher and student. Every week since January 2011, Westport ninth-grader Peter Hartwell and mentor David Thomas Train have been exploring the Champlain Area Trails along shoreline, streams, wetlands, and woods near Westport. Those explorations eventually prompted them to enter the Champlain Area Trails Travel Writing Contest.

Hartwell attends the BOCES Special Education program in Mineville. To supplement the Mineville curriculum, he studies several subjects privately—including field biology with Thomas Train. “Peter and I spend time together every Wednesday after school in outdoor science explorations, and we wanted to share what we do and see,” Thomas Train explained. “He is an avid outdoors explorer, with great observation and drawing skills.” And Thomas Train is certainly no stranger to the trails of the Champlain Valley: He is ...
