Following Their Footsteps: The Knox Trail Honor Walk
During the winter of 1775–1776, Colonel Henry Knox left Boston, marched to New York’s Fort Ticonderoga, and—with a team of men and oxen—hauled more than 50 tons of cannons and other arms back to Boston’s Dorchester Heights. The threat of these cannons firing on British ships in Boston Harbor led to the British evacuation of Boston, a major victory for the fledging Continental Army.
In 1926, New York and Massachusetts began installing commemorative markers that traced the so-called “Knox Trail” at locations in the two states.
In April of 2012, staff members of Patriots of the American Revolution Magazine will walk the Knox Trail.
The mission: to honor Henry Knox and his “noble train of artillery,” to raise awareness of and promote the Knox Trail as a unique American historical route, and to help the American Revolution Association ...

sublime, romanticism, Henry David Thoreau, Thomas Cole and the Hudson River
School, John Muir, Ansel Adams, and the Lorax.

January 27, 2012 - Westport, NY- An independent field biology study turned out to be especially fruitful for both teacher and student. Every week since January 2011, Westport ninth-grader Peter Hartwell and mentor David Thomas Train have been exploring the Champlain Area Trails along shoreline, streams, wetlands, and woods near Westport. Those explorations eventually prompted them to enter the Champlain Area Trails Travel Writing Contest.
Hartwell attends the BOCES Special Education program in Mineville. To supplement the Mineville curriculum, he studies several subjects privately—including field biology with Thomas Train. “Peter and I spend time together every Wednesday after school in outdoor science explorations, and we wanted to share what we do and see,” Thomas Train explained. “He is an avid outdoors explorer, with great observation and drawing skills.” And Thomas Train is certainly no stranger to the trails of the Champlain Valley: He is ...
