This past weekend hundreds of visitors and residents came into the village of North Creek for Race The Train, WayneStock, the Tri County Auxiliary Bazaar and Artists and Authors at the Hudson. Welcoming them were colorful new banners adorning the primary entrance to the village of North Creek.

The volunteer efforts were spearheaded by the marketing subcommittee of the Business Alliance. This group of women business owners who have “entertainingly” called themselves “WOW” or Women of Wisdom, consists of Sharon Taylor the Alpine Lodge, Lisa Thomas of Trimmers, Mary Ann and Anna Bowers of bar Vino, Poiema and the Vault, Kathleen Bennett of Braley & Noxon Hardware, Helen Miner of The Owens House Educational Center, Andy Waldron at Andie’s at Smiths, Laura Pierson of Laura’s Tavern, Sarah Hayden of Café Sarah, Mary Jane Lang of Cunningham’s Ski Barn, and Laurie Arnheiter of Hudson River Trading Co. The funding for this effective marketing and beautification project was made possible due to the Towns participation in the Warren County Bed Tax program. The committee submitted a bed tax application in 2009 and received a high rating for signage, banners and holiday lighting. The same committee yearly coordinates the “Lights On” program including the “Lights On Christmas Parade”.

The 10 four-season recreation-oriented welcome banners were placed at the entrance to the business district to encourage travelers to reconsider speeding past the community to northern destinations on the (appropriately named) RT 28 Bypass. Additionally the committee believed it would reinforce the recreational opportunities available in the immediate area. In 1992 the award winning North Creek Action Plan crafted by the community and Saratoga Associates identified the primary gateway to the community as the 28N entrance and proposals for beautification were recommended and never fulfilled. The banner project was an attempt by this group of volunteers to begin to improve that entrance and welcoming visitors. “Now I would like to see the poles painted” said local resident Tim Record. “The banners look nice; the poles could use some sprucing up!” When asked by the Gore Mountain Chamber President Dave Bulmer to include the chambers “Purely Adirondack” line, the committee supported the chambers request on many of the banners while also promoting “An Authentic Ski Town’ on others.

The committee opted to use local businesses to complete the project. Garnet Signs of Chestertown supplied the materials and hung the signs and banners. Photography was supplied by James McEntee and Linda Wohlers and designs were created by Linda Wohlers a new resident to the community. Ms. Wohlers most recently worked with Warren County Department of Tourism following a lengthy term as Creative Director for New York States “I Love NY” marketing campaign. Residents will recognize local citizens in many of the banners. Bill Thomas who for 18 years served as the Supervisor for the Town of Johnsburg, and presently sits as one of the commissioners of the Adirondack Park Association and occasional conductor of the Upper Hudson River Railroad is the first banner, followed by Gail Setlock Snow Sports Supervisor at Gore Mountain, Michelle Pollock of Lake George Kayak, Bolton Landing with Warren County Assistant DA Jason Carusone cross country skiing, Sagamore assistant chef and friend at the black hole fishing, and Josh Harvey a Wevertown resident on the rope swing at the towns recreation area known as the Black Hole among others.

The committee wishes to thank the Town of Johnsburg and the Bed Tax Committee for its support and pledges its efforts to unselfishly continue to promote the town, its residents and businesses through volunteer economic development efforts.

Schroon Lake, NY. Located in the high peaks region of New York’s Adirondack Mountains, the Schroon Lake B&B, has been a getaway for couples and families since 1989. August 3rd, 2010 will mark the one year anniversary under owners Mark and Sharon Piper.

Although hosts Mark and Sharon Piper have only been in business for a short time, they are committed to unparalleled service and hospitality and have succeeded in bringing the B&B’s reputation to new heights. “It is so rare to find the perfect combination of charm, ambience, beautiful lodging, location, breakfast cuisine and terrific hosts, and they certainly provided all that to their guests,” said RJ Ruggiero, a contributing reviewer on tripadvisor.com.

Built in the 1920’s, the historic, Victorian farmhouse offers majestic views of the surrounding mountains from the Grand Front Porch. The scenic Schroon Lake is nearby offering nine miles of crystal clear water for all manners of water based sports including kayaking, canoeing, fishing, swimming and boating.

Guests are invited to refresh their spirits in the peace and beauty of the mountains and enjoy a homemade breakfast, including scrumptious egg bakes made with farm fresh eggs, waffles, pancakes, or French toast, delicious afternoon refreshments and deluxe accommodations. The cook (Mark) gladly accommodates special dietary restrictions as well.

After a day enjoying the serenity of the Adirondacks guests will return to one of the five elegant guest rooms on the estate. The rooms are kept in immaculate condition and are stocked with all of the amenities most people associate with hotels. The true allure of Schroon Lake B&B is the personal attention and warm hospitality the Piper’s provide each and every guest they welcome. Mark and Sharon strive to create a relaxing atmosphere so that travelers feel at home.

On that Saturday, both morning and afternoon trains will run, taking passengers northward in the morning to enjoy not only the scenic excursion by rail, but also allowing them to enjoy an outing in one of the First Wilderness Heritage Corridor communities along the route.

Corinth: Passengers in Corinth will have an opportunity to board a bus about an hour before train time for a short tour of the city, and then will take the train north, over the 94-foot high trestle crossing near the confluence of the Hudson and Sacanadaga at Hadley.

Hadley: Guests choosing to spend the day in Hadley and Lake Luzerne get off the train at the Rockwell Street Stop. There, a walk or a horse-drawn carriage leads to historic sites, a museum, and a gallery. For those craving action, a rafting trip provides the desired adrenaline rush.

Stony Creek: The train chugs to its next stop, 1000 Acres Ranch Resort, in Stony Creek, where special Saturday options include golf or riding packages. Another choice is a van drive for “A Touch of the Wild,” a tour that explores an old farm, dines at the Stony Creek Inn and then visits Wolf Pond Stables to observe special horse training methods.

Thurman: The train’s northern terminus hits Thurman, where passengers may indulge in either a day’s adventure at Hickory Hill Ski Center (“Hickory Heli and Hiking”) or embark on the “Forest, Farm and Country Fixins Tour”:

Escape to the little mountain town of Thurman, NY, aboard a van that will take you to hidden sites waiting to be discovered. Open to those arriving on Upper Hudson River Railroad and those arriving by own vehicle. Remember to bring your proof of prepaid online registration: one fee covers van, sites, luncheon, tax, & gratuity. Tour vans depart from Thurman Station at 10:30 a.m.

First Destination: Martin’s Certified Tree Farm. You’ll see a sawmill in operation and learn how today’s foresters conserve wood and protect the woodlands they depend upon. Sustainable forestry means that there will be lumber for future generations. You’ll take a walk in the woods and learn how the Martins selectively cut their trees, seeking out just the right ones to use for the various products in their lines of dimensional lumber, Adirondack (waney edge) siding, bar tops, signs and more.

But Martin’s Lumber is not all work and no play: you’ll also see the artistic efforts known as “Lucyann’s Stained Glass Stepping Stones” and “Lucyann’s Paper Bead Earrings,” complete with demonstrations of how they are created. Shop for your favorites.

Next arrive at nationally publicized Nettle Meadow Farm & cheese-making facility. Take a moment to sample some of the fruits of their labors – namely, the cheeses. Then you may shop for gourmet chevre with such enticing flavors as lemon verbena, maple walnut, pumpkin spice, herb, pepper and garlic. Or, if your taste runs to semi-aged cheese, check out the Kunik, Crane Mountain and Three Sisters. All are frozen for easy, safe transporting home.

When you arrive, Nettle Meadow staff will take you on a guided tour to meet the members of the herd that produces Nettle Meadow’s cheese. These comical goats will throng to the fence to say hello, and you’ll learn to address each by their own name. There’s a sizable flock of sheep, too, and llamas that stand guard against from coyotes and other predators.

You’ll also get to meet some sanctuary animals taken in by Nettle Meadow, who are sustained in part thanks to the tour fee. Then it’s on to The Glen Lodge & Market, a B&B with Adirondack Great Camp ambiance where you’ll enjoy “country fixin’s” underneath the pavilion.

Extra time after you eat? You’re within walking distance of the Hudson and Wild Waters Outdoor Center. Or wander through the garden on your way to browse in the gift shop. Van returns to Thurman Station by 3 p.m. Questions? Phone 518-623-9595.
