Gathering some of the things you love most about the Adirondacks and nature, you will create an assemblage for a shadowbox. We will use Audubon prints, nest, feathers, birch bark, and mosses. We will also explore pressed and ink printed flowers and ferns, including the microwave flower press. A lovely chance to work with natural objects and create a work of beauty.

Great for roasting marshmallows or even flipping your steak on the grill, the process of making these roasters is also a great way to learn the basics of blacksmithing. In this class you will learn how to build a fire in the forge, heat metal, twist, cut, and bend while using the tools of the blacksmith. This class is open to all wanting to try their hands at blacksmithing and have some fun! NOTE: Hard shoes and long pants are required for student safety.

In this class, which can be a continuation of the morning class, we will learn the traditional technique of assembling pinecone flowers. We will also design a "woodsy" vase suitable for an "Adirondack Style" arrangement or candle. You'll be amazed at your creation, and so will others. This will make a lovely centerpiece for your table or a gift for a friend.

The Adirondack Style is unique. It combines traditional furniture making with the materials found in this region - Birch bark, twigs, logs, and more. Found in the earliest "Great Camps" of our region, the skilled craftsmen who made this unique furniture were inspired by the world around them. In this class you will be guided from start to finish: from the selection of the materials and their preparation, to the joinery required, as well as the aesthetics that will help you make a fine end table suitable for your "Great Camp" or home.

Choose to make either a traditional rag rug or a thick-pile shag rug - or be creative and mix the two together for your own unique rug. Both fabric strips and rug selvedges will be available in a variety of colors and patterns. The looms are pre-warped looms, so come right in and weave your one-of-a-kind rug. You will leave the day with a completed 2' x 3' rug that can be used in your home for years to come.

A wonderful night of music with celebrated local musician, Dan Berggren. Dan Berggren plays the traditional songs of the Adirondacks, paying close attention to the stories of friends and neighbors, writing songs about them and sharing them with audiences near and far.

In this class, you will be introduced to the basic timber framing methods and the tools that are used for building with timber frame construction. You probably already have the tools you need in your garage at home. There will be demonstrations of the different methods of cutting the basic mortise and tenon joints, as well as putting together knee braces and the different ways of using hand tools in framing and their relative efficiency.

In this five-day class, you will make your own Windsor Chair. You will be guided throughout the process: from splitting logs for bendings and spindles, to shaping all the parts, steam bending, and assembly. The class will also cover sharpening a drawknife, plane irons,and how to set up and use a plane. You will shape your seat from a 2" thick X 21" wide X 16" deep blank of pine or poplar (the typical choice of wood in the early Windsors).

Join Shellie every other Tuesday in July and August as she guides you around the AFS neighborhood and points out the nature that surrounds you. You are sure to find local treasures of flora and fauna that you may never have noticed before - that's the special magic of a guided walk. Shellie has led many nature walks and has the stories to prove it! This relaxing walk will leave you with a greater appreciation of the world around you and is great for individuals and families of all ages.

Join Director of Horticulture Heidi Karkoski for a tour of the King's Garden from a designer's perspective that includes insights on the garden's current restoration and the continuous evolution of the plantings within its walls. This Colonial Revival-era garden was initially developed between 1910 and 1921 on the same ground cultivated by the Fort's soldiers in the 18th century.

Learn the century-old art of creating pictures with yarn in a simple and easy way. This workshop will introduce you to basic tapestry weaving techniques, focusing on design, building shapes, and methods to join colors. You will learn the basic terms and tools of weaving, as well as the finishing techniques needed to turn the tapestry you create in class into a pillow with a woven front.

A sharp knife with a thin blade is a treasure to have - and a challenge to make. In this class you will hand forge and finish a thin knife blade. Then learn how to prepare and affix a wooden scale to the side of the knife. This class is intended for students with prior experience in blacksmithing who are familiar with fire control and hammering techniques, and who have completed at least one knife before taking this class.

Shellie Kovaleski will show participants of all ages that there truly is nothing to fear in the great outdoors after dark. Join Shellie just before dusk as she treks into the woods behind AFS. As Shellie tells the story of the origin of night you won't even notice the growing darkness and you'll fully realize how calming and serene the woods at night can be. Followed by a fireside gathering to share s'mores and other goodies.

We all are challenged by stress in our lives. Learn to use weaving and the fiber arts to overcome the negative effects of tension and rediscover the joy in your life. This course will be of interest to both novice and experienced weavers and will focus on the use of Japanese Saori weaving ("free-weaving") techniques to release your inner creativity and reduce stress. Materials fee includes: table-top frame loom to take home, shuttle, pickup stick, yarn for your project, and written instructions.

This is a great Market Basket with Native American origins. Students will learn simple row-on-row weaving and a bit of hand shaping to create this useful basket. Sturdy Shaker Tape strapping is woven in to create a strong basket well suited to shopping at your local farmer's market, a trip to the beach, or an overnight at a friend. Colorful dyed reed will be available for students to customize their baskets. Approximate finished size - 12" long x 12" high x 9" wide.

In this class you will start with a cut piece of red osier dogwood and finish with a complete, usable arrow. Learn featherworking, used for fletchings and decoration, fastening with sinew, and straightening the arrow using antler. You will have a choice of points.

One of the most distinguishing marks of a true woodworking craftsperson is the ability to cut and fit perfect dovetail joints. Today dovetail joints are often cut with routers and jigs but woodworkers still use chisels, mallets, and skill to make joints which become more than the joining of wood, they become part of the art. You will learn about the importance of sharpening your chisels and many other details to make beautiful hand-cut dovetails.

So you want to build a gate? Learn how to design, build, and hang a traditional gate. The gate will be constructed with mortise and tenon construction including an upset heel bar and a simple latch assembly. We will cover stock size consideration, how to compensate for the sag in a gate, and the mounting and hinge system. A properly made gate will not sag with time, and will last longer than we will live if done properly - and we will do it properly!
