About this event

Help Long Lake, NY shake up the snow globe by donating old Nordic and alpine skis for the 1st Annual Ski Burning ceremony to be held at the Long Lake Winter Carnival on Saturday January 14th at Noon.

This winter hasn’t exactly gone to plan weather wise, so the Town of Long Lake is taking matters up another level to start its first ceremonial ski burning to help convince Ullr to send snow. According to Norse mythology Ullr (pronounced ool-er) was a god associated with archery and hunting, but he was also a skilled skier, and thus he became known as the god of winter or god of snow. As an offering to Ullr, ski bums have been burning old ski gear in the United States since the 1960’s, and this tradition continues today in ski towns across the US and Canada.

Help the Town of Long Lake get winter back on track by donating old ski equipment, without bindings, for the bonfire. In addition to ski equipment, the Town is also accepting Christmas Trees for the ceremonial burn. Donations can be left outside of the Geiger Arena (6 Pavilion Way, Long Lake NY) any time up until Saturday January 14th. For more information about the bonfire or the 2023 Winter Carnival call 518-624-3077 or email events@mylonglake.com or visit www.mylonglake.com/winter-carnival for up-to-date schedule, photos and videos from past events.
