The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued a ban on open burning from now until May 15. There is a lack of green vegetation this year, combine that with dry grass and leaves, warm weather, and breezy conditions and you’ve got the recipe for a wildfire.
Brush fires accounted for more than one third of all wildfires between 1985 and 2009, the most common cause of wildfires in the State. Forty-six percent of the wildfires in New York State occur between March 16 and May 15.
Please be responsible and refrain from burning brush until the conditions become safer.
