From museums to old ruins, the Adirondack coastal region of Lake Champlain is home to many historic sites. This September, Friends of Crown Point State Historic Site will sponsor for the first time a “Five Museums Sampler” tour of sites located around the Lake Champlain Bridge.

The “Five Museums Sampler” tour is a follow up to last September’s “Five Formidable Forts” tour, also sponsored by the Friends of Crown Point State Historic Site. That tour brought guests to the ruins of two forts (1734, 1759) in Crown Point, NY, two forts (1660, 1731) at Chimney Point in Addison, VT, and the site of a Revolutionary War fort (1776) in Orwell, VT.
This year’s tour will center around the Lake Champlain Bridge as participants drive themselves to five museums located in both New York and Vermont. The museums are all within 10 miles of the bridge, and participants will be given maps and directions to each stop. The tour will take place on Saturday, September 17, 2016.
Schedule of Events
- The tour will start at 8:45AM at the Daughters of the American Revolution’s “John Strong Mansion” Museum in West Addison, VT.
- The second stop is also located in West Addison, VT, at the Chimney Point State Historic Site. The site is home to a variety of museum exhibits.
- Next, the tour will head across the bridge to the Crown Point State Historic Site Museum.
- The trip to Crown Point, NY, will include a trip to the Penfield Homestead Museum.
- The tour will end in Port Henry, NY, at the Iron Center Museum.
Halfway through the tour, the Friends of Crown Point State Historic Site will provide each participant a bottle of cold water and a bag of snacks.
After the final stop at the Iron Center Museum, there will be a buffet lunch at the classic 1920s diner in Port Henry. A game-style history museum quiz will go on during the lunch.
