The Garden Parking Lot in Keene is one of the main access points to the Eastern High Peaks Wilderness. This summer, hikers need to utilize another way to the Garden Trailhead, or choose other trails to explore – here’s what you need to know.

Johns Brook Bridge needs to be replaced. Work is expected to begin as soon as weather and road conditions allow, and is predicted to last throughout the summer. No vehicles or pedestrians will be able to pass the bridge once construction begins; the parking lot is also currently closed for spring.
The only way to access the Garden Trailhead is by parking at the Marcy Field Parking Lot and using the Town of Keene Shuttle. The Town of Keene plans to operate the shuttle from 7am to 7pm every day. The cost is $10 round-trip per person ($13 Canadian).
However, due to a current lack of drivers, this schedule might be reduced. You can check on the schedule on the Town’s website at TownOfKeeneNY.com/2019-garden-hiker-shuttle-information.
The Town acknowledged in a press release how much of an inconvenience this closing of the parking lot is, particularly as the weather is getting nicer for hikers. However, it is a crucial public safety issue. Currently, first response vehicles cannot get over the bridge safely.
Please respect the closure, no parking signs, and private parking. Don’t park or walk on private property to gain access. There will be posted No Parking areas along Adirondack Street, Market Street, and Johns Brook Road. Illegally parked cars will be towed.
