Looking for a fun and free way to explore the Adirondacks, all while learning about different artistic mediums? Head up to the Saranac Lake area this weekend for latest installment of the ArtWorks Studio Tour series to watch artists at work in their homes and studios.
Artists across the region, from Saranac Lake to Malone, will open their studio doors to the public on Friday 8/30, Saturday 8/31, and Sunday 9/1. Guests can watch the artists at work, speak with them about their process, and even potentially buy pieces directly from the artists themselves. The tours are free and self-guided, and visitors can explore the studios at their own paces.
There are artists across several mediums participating in this month’s tour. Deborah Geurtze, a new addition to the tour, recently participated in the Adirondack Plein Air Festival.
- Deborah Geurtze (printmaking) in Saranac Lake
- Sandra Hildreth (plein air) in Saranac Lake
- Edith Urban (oil painting) in Onchiota
- Stephen Horne (landscape painting) in Paul Smiths
- Tim Fortune (watercolor and oil painting) in Saranac Lake
- Mark Kurtz (photography) in Saranac Lake
- Marie Cogar (fused glass) in Saranac Lake
- Mark Paul (woodworking) in Sugar Bush
- Peter Shrope (pottery) in Rainbow Lake
In addition to individual artist’s studios, various galleries will be participating in the tour, including Downtown Artist Cellar, NorthWind Fine Arts, Adirondack Artists Guild, and BluSeed Studios. Members of the Artists Guild will be at these locations, showcasing their processes and finished works. Historic Saranac Lake will also offer tours of their The Art of the Cure exhibit on Friday and Saturday.
It’s important to note that the studios and galleries on the tour are not necessarily open for all three days, so you’ll want to check beforehand to make sure the artist you want to visit has their studio open to the public on that particular day.
Each month, different artists allow visitors to step inside their creative processes during the ArtWorks Studio Tours. If you enjoy the tours, you’ll want to check out their special event later this fall. On November 29, ArtWorks will bring the participating artists to one place, The Hotel Saranac ballroom, for an evening of art, food, refreshments, and the opportunity to shop pieces by the artists. Tickets will be $15.
