Two students, one from Guilderland High School and one from Farnsworth Middle school, paddled Lake George in May to raise money for their schools’ athletic programs.
Brothers Marcus and Brian Knodler paddled from Bolton Landing to Black Mountain, hiked to the summit, returned to their kayaks, and continued paddling to Ticonderoga on May 29th.
“The Knodler Brothers’ Lake George Challenge,” as they called it, was successful in raising more than $1,000 for the schools’ athletic programs. The two had been seeking donations through social media outlets such as facebook and twitter, as well as letters submitted to local businesses.
After hearing the Knodler brother’s plan to paddle Lake George, the Lake George Kayak Co. invited the boys in and promised to help them reach their goal. The company loaned the brothers some equipment, including two sixteen-foot kayaks and personal flotation devices.
The brothers hope that the trip will become an annual event, that more kids will want to participate in. This was a creative way to raise money for their school, and it was probably a lot of fun for these young men.
Would you be interested in participating in something like this? If not, what are some other interesting fund-raisers that you’ve noticed?
