With nice weather coming our way we expect hikers to be out and about in the Adirondacks this weekend, so it’s more important than ever to adhere to the CDC guidelines for social distancing and #RecreateLocal.

Stay Safe, Recreate Responsibly
The DEC and Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation (State Parks) are encouraging New Yorkers to stay safe and be smart about outdoor recreation at this time. Engaging in responsible recreation means incorporating guidance from the CDC and NYS Department of Health for reducing the spread of infectious diseases. Use common sense, practice social distancing, and #RecreateLocal.
A Note on Closures & Campgrounds
Playgrounds, indoor facilities (nature centers, historic houses, etc.), state-owned golf courses, DEC-controlled fire towers, and DEC-operated campgrounds are all closed at this time. The issuance of backcountry camping permits for groups of 10 or more, and for more than three days at one location, is temporarily suspended.
The public may enter DEC campgrounds to access trails, walk, or bike. Motor and motorized vehicles are prohibited from entering DEC campgrounds. Additionally, there is limited access to athletic courts and sporting fields, and limited parking.
The Current Trail Conditions
Trails are a mix of mud, ice, and snow. Mud and ice are present at low to moderate elevations. Ice and deep snow are present in the higher elevations. Trail crampons should be carried on all hikes and snowshoes should be carried on all high elevation hikes.
Continue to Sign In at Trailheads – With Precautions
Only one person per group should sign in at a trailhead (and groups should be small and consist of only immediate household members). Bring your own pen, avoid commonly touched surfaces, carry hand sanitizer with you, and don’t cough or sneeze at the register. Maintain social distancing with other hikers.
Rattlesnake Mountain, Other Trails Closed
Rattlesnake Mountain in Willsboro is now closed due to crowding and failure to comply with social distancing guidance. This is a privately-owned trail, and the property owner and the town noticed the heavy use of the trail and hikers not adhering to the proper guidelines.
For the Rock Climbers
Many rock climbing routes are currently closed to allow peregrine falcons to nest, such as all routes on Sleeping Beauty Mountain and Potash Mountain.
Specific Trail Notices & More Info for Hikers
The DEC’s Otter Creek Horse Trail Facility is temporarily closed to overnight camping. Day-use of the area is still allowed, but the water and restroom facilities are not available.
The Adirondack Mountain Reserve (Ausable Club) has reduced parking capacity on its lots near the intersection of Ausable Road and State Route 73 to a maximum of 28 vehicles. Parking is not permitted along Ausable Road, on Ausable Club lands, or along the nearby stretches of State Route 73. Choose a different hike or return on another day if necessary.
The Adirondack Mountain Club’s High Peaks Information Center is closed through May 14th. Parking at the Adirondak Loj Trailhead remains open to the public for a fee, but vehicles should park more than six feet apart. The restrooms on the back porch of the High Peaks Information Center are open.
Whiteface Mountain Ski Area is closed to public access. This blocks public access to Bear Den Mountain Trailhead and Trail.
The DEC’s Lake Flower Boat Launch in Saranac Lake is closed to trailered boats due to construction at the site.
