This beautiful waterfall is a 6.5-8 miles hike from from the northern terminus of the Northville-Placid Trail (located on Averyville Rd, Lake Placid, NY). With places to camp, fire pits, quiet isolation, link ups to other trails, and crisp, clear mountain water, Wanika Falls is a wonderful place to take in a mid-day lunch or a spot to spend a serene night away from it all. With Lake Placid so close, supplies are easily gotten locally with big chain grocery stores, and the outdoor sports supplier Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) in the middle of the city limits. A trip to Wanika Falls is a nice way to spend a weekend with the family (younger children may have great difficulty on the trail, but, in my opinion, 8 years old and over should be ok IF they are experienced)...or take your significant other for a peaceful night under starry night sky (no light pollution so the sky is beautiful, with a chance at a Northern Lights viewing in the later months). It is absolutely worth the hike!
