There’s no doubt that the Adirondacks are home to gorgeous, vibrant fall foliage. Travel + Leisure recently complied a list of ‘America’s Best Towns for Fall Colors’ for September 2014, and the silver medal was given to Lake Placid, NY.
Travel + Leisure readers who voted on the best towns for fall color in ‘America’s Best Towns for Fall Color’ gave top scores to towns representing the full color spectrum – from bright reds to deep purples. Beat out only by Oakland, MD, Lake Placid was recognized for it’s stunning variety of trees stretching along the Olympic Trail scenic byway. The foliage along this scenic route provides a “striking show of color for its 170 miles,” according to Travel + Leisure. While T+L is certainly welcome to their own opinion, the Adirondacks will always be #1 in our book!
The article recommended taking the Fall Foliage Train tour on the Adirondack Scenic Railroad. The excursion provides leaf peepers with the opportunity to view some of the most gorgeous displays of color and foliage throughout the Adirondacks, riding in a couch or open air car.
Travel + Leisure also mentioned the best viewing time for foliage in the Adirondacks to be from early to mid-October. Check out our Fall Foliage Guide as well to get a better idea of the best time to go leaf peeping by region.

Some of the best advice from the article would have to be from professional photographer Michael Clemmer. His No. 1 rule? “Don’t let taking photos keep you from enjoying the scenery.”
Taking Clemmers’ advice now that fall is officially here, it’s time to get out there and fully experience the leaves turning all shades of crimson, orange and gold. Make a stop to Lake Placid, and see this award-winning foliage for yourself!
Once the fall turns to winter, Lake Placid remains an ideal destination for skiers and snowboarders alike! Check out why Lake Placid was also picked as one of ‘The East’s Most Livable Ski Towns!’
