32 years. That’s how long it’s been since the NCAA ski championships were held in Lake Placid. Back then, there wasn’t even a championship for women’s skiing! The lengthy gap may seem hard to believe, since Lake Placid is such a storied winter sport destination, but the decades-long drought is finally coming to an end next week.

148 athletes will converge on Lake Placid on March 11-14 to compete in the National Collegiate Men’s and Women’s Skiing Championships in both nordic and alpine events. Mt. Van Hoevenberg will be the nordic host while Whiteface Mountain will take on the alpine duties.
The tentative schedule is as follows:
- March 11 – Mt. Van Hoevenberg – Women’s 5K and Men’s 10K Freestyle
- March 12 – Whiteface Mountain – Men’s and Women’s Giant Slalom
- March 13 – Mt. Van Hoevenberg – Women’s 15K and Men’s 20K Classical
- March 14 – Whiteface Mountain – Men’s and Women’s Slalom
The official hosts of the championship will be St. Lawrence University and the Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA).
If you’re a fan of skiing, you should take advantage of the chance to see the country’s best collegiate skiers at the 2015 championship. You never know, it could be another 30+ years before the event returns to the area!
