What's New In the Adirondacks

March 2012 Archives

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued a ban on open burning from now until May 15. There is a lack of green vegetation this year, combine that with dry grass and leaves, warm weather, and breezy conditions and you've got the recipe for a wildfire.

Brush fires accounted for more than one third of all wildfires between 1985 and 2009, the most common cause of wildfires in the State. Forty-six percent of the wildfires in New York State occur between March 16 and May 15.

Please be responsible and refrain from burning brush until the conditions become safer.

Don't be surprised if you see a few more mountain men than usual in the Adirondack Park this fall. Starting in September, the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry is offering a semester of study in the mountains.
Garnet Hill Lodge is now owned by Don Preuninger and Mindy Piper, and Don gives us the scoop on the old and the new at this Adirondack Inn. The four season lodge rests on historical property, located in North River, New York. Built in 1936, it was originally conceived as an Adirondack Camp retreat for artists.   In the past, the area was known for garnet mining and logging. Today, Garnet Hill Lodge is a premier cross country ski resort with endless acres of trails, meadows and mountains, waiting to be explored.
