NorthWind Fine Arts: Serendipity, Encountering the Sublime
NorthWind Fine Arts Gallery, at 85 Main Street in Saranac Lake NY, is excited to be hosting its first dual show with photographer Russ Hartung and plein air painter Susan Whiteman during the month of September. The exhibit, “Serendipity: Encountering the Sublime,” will feature a new collection of photos and paintings that showcase the beauty of the Adirondacks.
Meet the artists!
Russ: Sept. 4, 24, & 26
Susan: Sept. 9, 11 & 19
About the artists:
Russ is a nature and landscape photographer who is still discovering the photographic possibilities of the Adirondack park, despite having been exploring the area with a camera since he was in high school.
He has won numerous awards including a “People’s Choice” award at the Darkroom Gallery and First Place awards in the Adirondack Life photo contests. His images have been published by NationalGeographic.com; Adirondack Life magazine, LocalADK Magazine and the Adirondack Mountain Club, among others.
Russ’ goal is to create a print with depth and clarity that gives the viewer the sense of “being there” - at the same spot, seeing the same scene. He loves to capture unique images of wildlife and crisp images of the Adirondack landscape.
Russ says: “I often feel like a hunter with a camera. I hunt for light; I hunt for gesture; and I hunt for the right moment. Then I try to master the technical details of composition, angle, focus, shutter speed and depth of field to capture those elements in a two-dimensional image. When they all combine just right in the same image, I can almost feel things ‘click’!”
Susan is a plein air artist who took 1st place in the Adirondack Artists Guild’s Regional Juried Show in 2019. Over the last ten years she has been accepted into numerous competitive plein air events across the state, and her work has been featured in galleries throughout the Northeast in solo and group shows. Her luminous paintings are done in oil, pastel, and watercolor.
Susan’s focus for this September’s show is a variety of plein air Adirondack landscapes and more in her “urban” Saranac Lake series “Back Ways and Alleyways,” that captures the unexpected beauty of those places. Angular and gritty, they form a nice contrast to her landscapes. She notes, “A friend told me I had a real “town and country” theme going on this year. I have to agree, and find that nature encroaches upon the town, and town encroaches upon the country in interesting ways.”
NorthWind Fine Arts is in its beautiful new location at 85 Main Street, Saranac Lake, NY. Gallery hours: Daily 10-4, closed Tuesdays.
