Searching for that thrilling boom in your chest and dazzle in your eyes this Fourth of July? There will be fireworks displays all over the Adirondacks!
So why do we launch fireworks on Independence Day? Well, a big country deserves some big candles on its birthday, doesn’t it?
The use of fireworks originates in ancient China, where they were first invented as a way to keep away evil spirits. They were set off at important events to keep evil at bay, and then people began to associate the colorful exotic explosions with celebrations.
Americans have celebrated July 4th as Independence Day (even though the Declaration was actually written on July 2) since 1777, when thirteen gunshots were sounded in the morning and evening in Bristol, Rhode Island. (Seems like we like big booming noises)
But don’t worry about the date – it isn’t a history hiccup. On July 4th, two days after Jefferson presented his finished work to Congress, the debating and revising was over and the Declaration was accepted and signed, making this date just as important and historic.
You can still celebrate the 2nd, the 4th, or even the whole weekend with Fireworks and Celebrations across the Adirondacks. Enjoy barbecues, other local foods, arts, crafts, music, live entertainment, freedom, liberty, and the pursuit of the perfect hot dog.
