Just got an update on the conditions in the Eastern Adirondacks, and it’s not good. As you know, the eastern High Peaks Wilderness, Giant Mountain Wilderness, and Dix Mountain Wilderness areas are all closed indefinitely. There will be DEC Forest Rangers positioned at trailheads in these wilderness areas, offering safe options in the nearby Forest Preserve for hikers and backpackers.
They will also be patrolling the closed areas to make sure people don’t try to sneak in and get caught up in the middle of unsafe trail conditions. Violators of this DEC order can be fined up to $250 and jailed for up to 15 days.
The law states: “No person shall enter or remain upon or use any forest access road, truck trail, road, trail, facility or any other area on State lands that are posted or designated by the department as closed to public use.”
Please people, be safe this weekend. Do not challenge DECs authority on this matter. If you NEED to get into the woods this weekend, please head to the western High Peaks region.
