In honor of April being National Poetry Month, we decided we’d do a little Adirondack poetry. Using a theme and rhyming scheme borrowed from a great poem my father, Kevin Cail, once wrote, I Hold The Sparrow, below is my spin-off: I Hold The Adirondacks.
I Hold The Adirondacks
I held the mountains in my hand
A postcard glimpse to spark demand
With glossy lakes and towering peaks
I vowed to go there with my feet
I held the mountains in my mind
I searched the web for hotel finds
Dreaming of the day I’d go
Days they seemed to pass so slow
I held the mountains in my hands
Climbing, clawing, grasping hands
Evergreens and marveling eyes
Mountain air and clear blue skies
I held the mountains in my veins
Numb to breathless muscle pains
Impassioned quest, I couldn’t stop
A single goal to reach the top
I held the mountains in my eyes
Summit view, I had my prize
Tranquil beauty unsurpassed
Heaven I had seen at last
I held the mountains all too short
But vowed they’d be my first resort
And though most days we’re far apart
I hold the mountains in my heart
