If you’ve ever ridden on the Adirondack Scenic Railroad, you know just how beautiful the lakes, streams, forests, and mountain views are as they drift past your window. This summer, there’s a whole new way to experience those same picturesque scenes, and get a little exercise while you’re at it.

This brand new activity is called railbiking, and it allows groups of two or four to pedal their way along the historic railroad between Saranac Lake and Lake Clear. The six mile journey is appropriate for peddlers of all ages and takes an hour, on average, to complete. Riders can start at Saranac Lake or Lake Clear, and there are activities at both destinations to help fill the day with even more fun.
Rail Explorers is the name of the company that’s providing this unique service, and they describe the sensation perfectly on their website, saying riders are “immersed in the wild, but guided by the rails.” The wilderness you’ll pedal through is inaccessible by car, making railbiking a one-of-a-kind experience. Rail Explorers says, “On your railbike ride, you might catch a glimpse of a white tailed deer, beaver, or even coyote.” Eagles, osprey, and countless species of plants can also be seen from your railbike.

Rail Explorers and the Adirondack Scenic Railroad are working together to preserve and promote the historic railway, and as more progress is made toward restoring passenger service to additional sections of the track, the relationship between the two will continue to progress. Railbikes and passenger trains are compatible, and can operate on the same lines with carefully coordinated schedules.
Think you might be interested in trying railbikes for yourself? Seats are limited and the bikes will only be available until Labor Day, so book yours today!
