Recreational opportunities are expanding yet again in the Adirondacks! Governor Andrew Cuomo recently announced that reservations are open for the new DEC-managed campground at the site of the former Frontier Town theme park in North Hudson.
What to Expect at the New Campground
The Frontier Town Campground encompasses several different areas to give a wide range of camping and recreational experiences for everyone. The site includes the following: an equestrian camping area with 33 sites; an RV and trailer camping area with 13 sites and a playground; a tent camping area with 45 sites; a seasonal day-use area along Schroon River with a pavilion, two playgrounds, and more; and a network of pedestrian trails.
The idea behind this initiative is to offer a recreational area that is accessible to everyone of all ages and abilities. The campground includes many Americans with Disabilities (ADA)-complaint features. Everyone from small children to seniors should be able to enjoy this campground.
“Families and individuals who come to this facility will be treated to beautiful sights and memorable adventures that will last a lifetime,” DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos said in a statement.
Info on the Trail System
The pedestrian trails include a 1,600-foot trail that loops along the river to the day-use area and another trail that connects the day-use area to the campground. The trail system includes two viewpoints along the Schroon River, and two overlooking an oxbow wetland. The river loop trail is handicapped accessible, and the connector trail primarily follows an existing North Hudson Trail.
