In this class you will make two different trellises to take home: an English Hoop Trellis and a Pea Cage Trellis. On the first day, the Hoop Trellis will be woven into the ground (and then removed) or can be done in a jig set on a table. The Hoop Trellis, approximately two feet in diameter and two feet tall, involves curving rods over and through in three tiers, then securing it with weaving at the base or ground level. The Pea Cage Trellis (made on the second day) will similarly be secured in the ground in a radius and secured with bands of weaving. The Pea Cage Trellis, five feet or less tall, is useful to support the growing of vines. Fresh willow and other woods will be provided, as well as young willow for weaving. No previous rustic experience necessary. This is a fun and productive class! You should be prepared to work outside kneeling on the ground or standing and be physically flexible. For the first time ever, join Fort staff for a rare look at the Pavilion from the inside! The Pavilion was built in 1826 by William Ferris Pell. He and his family occupied it as a summer home through the late 1830s. By 1840 the house had begun to be used as a hotel, its primary function through 1900. When Stephen H.P. and Sarah G.T. Pell began the restoration of Fort Ticonderoga in 1909, they simultaneously undertook the restoration of the Pavilion and the building was used again as a Pell family summer residence through 1987. This tour examines the history and use of this grand summer home and one-time hotel and looks at that challenges it presents for Fort Ticonderoga as it plans the future use of the structure. Tours begin at 11:00 am near the Guest Services Desk in the Log House Welcome Center. Tour duration is about an hour and a half once we assemble at the Pavilion. Space is limited to 12 participants per tour, advanced reservations are recommended or tickets, as available, can be purchased on the day of the tour at the Guest Services Desk in the Log House Welcome Center. Price is $35 per person plus cost of general admission. Your receipt acts as your reservation for the tour and must be presented to the tour leader at the beginning of the tour.
