Lake Placid has been recognized as one of the Top 10 Most Authentic Ski Towns – not just in the US, but in all of North America! See where we ranked and who we beat out.
Lake Placid came in at number five on the list of Most Authentic Ski Towns, beating out skiing spots in Colorado, Montana, Alaska, Wyoming, and British Columbia in Canada.
Here’s the full list:
- Sun Valley, ID
- Stowe, VT
- Taos, NM
- Steamboat, CO
- Lake Placid, NY
- Crested Butte, CO
- Whitefish, MT
- Rossland, BC
- Jackson, WY
- Girdwood, AK
The towns were chosen for their appreciation for mountain culture, history, and skiing. The roundup was put together by UnofficialNetworks.com, “your ski bums guide to outdoor news and events.”
The write up on Lake Placid acknowledges that the region is “home to some serious skiing history. The town is the only place in North America to host two winter Olympic Games (1932 and the 1980 Winter Olympics).”
In addition, Whiteface Mountain has the greatest vertical drop in eastern North America at 3,430 feet.
If you ski at Whiteface, you’ll be enjoying the exact same slopes as winter Olympic champions. The mountain has over 86 trails with 22 miles of terrain, a third of which are for experts; there are also Learn to Ski programs available, so skiers of all levels can enjoy the mountain.
We’re not quite into skiing season just yet, but you don’t have to wait for winter to enjoy Whiteface Mountain and Lake Placid!
Many may not know Whiteface is actually an excellent place to spot some fall foliage if you’re into hiking! And if you’re not, it’s the only High Peak that allows you to drive up the mountain, so you can experience the spectacular scenery without necessarily hiking.
The Whiteface Veteran’s Memorial Highway is open this year through this Saturday, October 16th, so if you want to drive up the mountain this week is your last chance for the season! Another option during the summer and early fall is to take a gondola ride, which is typically open from early June through early October, having just closed this past Columbus Day.
There are also plenty of events going on all year in Lake Placid, including the upcoming Lake Placid Brewfest.
But for those of you just dying to get out skiing, the Whiteface Mountain Ski Center plans to reopen, weather permitting, in November for skiing, gondola rides, and more!
