New Lake Placid Trailhead Opens Along the Adirondack Rail Trail

By Gavin Hochsprung

A new gateway to the Adirondack Rail Trail is now open in Lake Placid, giving residents and visitors an improved starting point for exploring the popular 34-mile recreation corridor.

The Open Space Institute (OSI), New York State officials, Village of Lake Placid representatives, and the Adirondack Rail Trail Association recently celebrated the opening of the new trailhead at 162 Station Street. This new facility improves eastern access to the trail, which connects Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, and Tupper Lake.

New Lake Placid Trailhead Features Parking, Restrooms & More

Designed to make accessing the Adirondack Rail Trail more convenient, the new Lake Placid trailhead offers a variety of amenities for visitors. The completed facility includes:

  • A pavilion with picnic tables
  • More than 40 parking spaces
  • Electric vehicle charging stations
  • ADA-compliant restrooms
  • A visitor kiosk and informational signage
  • Bicycle racks
  • A bicycle repair station
  • Eco-friendly lighting

These improvements create a welcoming place for cyclists, pedestrians, and other outdoor enthusiasts to begin their adventures along the Adirondack Rail Trail.

$2 Million Project Supports Adirondack Recreation & Tourism

The $2 million trailhead project was designed, fundraised, and managed by the Open Space Institute in partnership with the Village of Lake Placid. Funding included a $500,000 New York State Environmental Protection Fund grant and $300,000 from Empire State Development's Regional Council Capital Funds Program.

State and local officials highlighted the project's potential to strengthen regional tourism, support local businesses, and improve recreational opportunities throughout the North Country.

The trailhead also features a special dedication. Its pavilion has been named in honor of Margot Ernst, a prominent North Country philanthropist and environmental leader who passed away earlier this year. The project was completed through the generosity of OSI Trustee John Ernst in her memory.
