Snowshoeing & Winter Hiking

Snowshoeing and winter hiking are some of the most budget-friendly winter adventures in the Adirondacks, especially if you already have the gear. Trail access is often free or low-cost. While snowshoes are undeniably expensive to buy, rentals are cheap and widely available.

At Garnet Hill Outdoor Center, you can rent snowshoes and explore groomed trails surrounded by quiet forests and scenic views. For a more dramatic experience, head to Ausable Chasm, where you can rent snowshoes or ice cleats for just $5. Self-guided tours cost $19.95 for adults and $11.95 for kids ages 8 to 12.

Another great option is High Falls Gorge, which offers winter hiking for $20.75 per adult and $16.75 per child (ages 4 to 12). Children under 3 enter free. If you're doing their popular waterfall walk, Yaktrax traction devices are included. Their separate 1-mile nature trail can be accessed with a small additional charge if you need to rent snowshoes.

And if you’re not ready to tackle a mountain, don’t underestimate the joy of a peaceful walk on a flat trail. The Adirondacks are full of accessible paths that offer stunning winter scenery without requiring technical gear.

Ice Skating

Ice skating is another classic winter activity that can be enjoyed affordably, especially if you rent skates instead of purchasing your own. In Lake Placid, you’ll find rentals available at Lake Placid Skate Rentals and Locker Room 5, while the Saranac Lake Civic Center also offers skate rentals and open skating hours.

Whether you're gliding across a groomed rink or skating outdoors on a frozen lake (conditions permitting), it's a fun and inexpensive way to enjoy winter.

Skiing at McCauley Mountain

While skiing can be one of the pricier winter pastimes, it doesn’t have to be. McCauley Mountain in Old Forge stands out for its reasonable lift ticket prices, making it a great choice for families or first-timers looking for a more affordable option.

  • Adult lift tickets: $35 (weekday), $45 (weekend)
  • Teen tickets: $30 (weekday), $40 (weekend)
  • Children’s tickets are even more budget-friendly

With 21 trails, a vertical drop of over 600 feet, and minimal lift lines, McCauley offers a great value for a full day on the slopes.

Free Fun at Winter Carnivals

Few winter events capture the spirit of the season quite like the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival. This beloved annual tradition is free to attend and packed with fun, including sports competitions, a parade, fireworks, and the famous Ice Palace - a stunning structure made entirely of ice blocks harvested from Lake Flower.

The carnival is a perfect family outing or day trip, offering entertainment for all ages without the high cost. And, there are many other winter carnivals in the Adirondacks!
